I spent two days near the Yellowcraig beach in 2021 and during that time I was just awestruck by the absolutely epic evening light and dramatic skies. I hope that I brought a little of the magic home with me and I've tried to bring it to mind on this canvas. Looking forward to my next trip there.

The lighthouse on Fidra Island was built in 1885 and the island is well known as the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. I can imagine Stevenson looking out to Fidra Island on a beautiful dramatic evening, his imagination running wild. 

My wife, myself and our cat Monty went out for a walk...yes I said cat! A pretty nice, restful looking day soon turned into a very changeable one (as it's prone to do here in Scotland), soon we were caught up in the mother of all wind, rain and hail storms - our brave wee cat boldly marching on in the hope he was heading back to the relative safety of the car. This painting captures the moments just before the weather changed.

I love the mystery and drama of this scene. I kept the brushwork free while cloaking the scene in deep shadows so the viewer has a chance to fill in the information themselves. This painting should keep the viewer interested and engaged as it reveals itself on each viewing,...hopefully for many years to come.

It was a cold and overcast autumn day on the cycle path to Balloch, the air wet with dew; I liked the little flecks of colour taking hold of the bushes at the side of the path against the grey, misty scrubland in the distance - and of course the cows (coos as we Scots call them).

A blustery day on the beach at Saddell Bay; sand whipping up and into my face...not a day for plein air painting or jam sandwiches.
